A movie review: Kal Ho Naa Ho

Yea, so this time I'd like to write about one of the best movies I've seen, this is my current favourite. :) I have earlier posted something about a song with the same name, it's from this movie. I had wanted to watch the movie since I heard the song but I had time to watch it just a couple of days ago. So, here are my opinions. (Don't read everything if you're about to watch the movie!!) Btw I actually wrote that for school for my English portfolio, that's why it seems so boring. :P

Kal Ho Naa Ho (Tomorrow May Never Come) is a romantic Indian comedy-drama movie released in 2003. It is written by Niranjan Iyengar and Karan Johar, directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Yash Johar and Karan Johar. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has composed its music and Javed Akhtar has written the lyrics of the songs. Some leading actors of the film are Shahrukh Khan, – who isn’t the “King of Bollywood” without a good reason – Jaya Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta. The movie has succeeded well both in India and abroad. It has won several awards, for example, National Film Awards two times and Filmfare Awards seven times. In Finland it was shown at the Helsinki Film Festival Love and Anarchy.

The movie is placed in New York where Naina, a young Indian woman, lives with her family. Her father has committed suicide and the family is facing problems with money. Many things change when their new neighbour Aman notices their misery and wants to help them. Soon Aman falls in love with Naina but doesn’t admit it because he knows that he can’t give his love to her a long time anymore. Naina has already started to love him but despite that Aman tries to make her fall in love with her best friend Rohit because he wants her to be happy. Eventually Naina and Rohit end up getting married.

After watching the movie I was very impressed and there were many assorted thoughts on my mind. The story was really touching and I loved the characters. The movie made me emphatic, sad and happy at the same time. I couldn’t help crying; tears just flowed down my cheeks and ruined my make-up. Aman was absolutely my favourite character. He is so unselfish, positive despite everything, a good man who wants to help everyone and make everybody happy – and he succeeds in that.

I think all the characters were very plausible; all of them had good actors or actresses who knew what they were doing. Everyone was perfect in their roles, of course, and I could immediately notice some things about the characters’ personalities. Some characters I didn’t specially like, for example Naina’s annoying grandmother. The most I could identify with Rohit because he is a little shy and because of the way he expresses himself. I could imagine myself doing and saying the same things if I was in his situation.

My favourite part of the movie was when Naina realises everything and she gets to know about Aman’s feelings and about his condition. That part is my favourite because particularly that evoke many feelings and it was one of the main scenes of the film. Another part I liked a lot was Naina and Rohit’s wedding because it was so beautiful and it was nice to see how the wedding is in their culture. In addition I liked all the songs and dances, most of them are happy and they have a nice effect on the movie.

The movie was in Hindi so it was rather difficult to understand anything but luckily the subtitles were very clear and it was easy to follow. The language is mostly quite simple, casual and neutral. All in all it was easy to follow the movie and its happenings. There were only a couple of confusing things but they got figured out in the end, too.

The purpose of the film is to entertain, of course, but not only that but also to make people think about life and living, what the most valuable things really are. The movie tells about real sincere love and it surely evokes many feelings in everybody who watches it. I would recommend the movie to everybody who likes romantic movies and drama or is interested in Bollywood and a little different kind of movies for a change.
