Born to succeed?

What and where we happen to be born into doesn't necessarily and automatically tell us what our future will be like. It depends on our choises and chances. Not everybody is given the same opportunities and possibilities in life but everybody can affect their living in some way.

If you lived in a wealthy family, you would probably go to school and study without even thinking if it was possible for you to study and get a good career and job in the future. For poor people that isn't as clear, they don't have money to spend on education, they need all they have to survive normal weekdays. One thing about Finland I'm proud of is that we can educate ourselves for free or almost free so everybody has the same and equal right for knowledge. If you can't study, you can't get a well-paid job and you will never get rid of poverty.

I think another important thing is people's health. Living in a slum can't be good for your health and going to the doctor and getting medication when needed isn't so simple. For us it might be, but not for everyone on this shared globe. And, of course, food, starvation and clean water are great problems that are difficult to solve.

If you think about it, money defines our place in the society. Even in Finland but, for example, in India much more than here. It feels wrong but that's how it is.

In Finland we had The Red Nose Day, on Friday I watched the Red Nose Day's show from TV. If someone doesn't know about Red Nose Day, its slogan is "Do something funny for money". It collects money to help the poorest countires in the world. This year in Finland we pained attention specially to Nepal and Burundi. Burundi is one of the poorest countries.

"The Finnish Justin Bieber" Robin Packalen made a new single and all its profits he gave for helping those countries. I'm not a great fan of his but I still bought that single, it was the least I could do, it wasn't even expensive. There were also many many other products like that, for example the noses of course, and mugs, shirts, gloves, flaslights etc. All the money went for Red Nose Day. Only during the The Red Nose Day's show Finns and different companies here donated 2,9 million euros (that's a huge amount, almost 3 millions, good Finns!!!!) for example by calling, texting or from online bank services.

We saw many touching videos from Nepal and Burundi, how the life is there. Stories of different families in various situations. Any of the stories was a good one. It was terrible to see the people suffering there. I wish there was some way I could help them. Specially the children. One video actually made me cry. There was a family, without parents. The oldest child was 7 years old. He was taking care of his little brother and sister, alone. No adults helping him, he was completely alone. They didn't even know how to cook. Sometimes they got food from neighbours if they brought them water. So they didn't even get anything to eat every day. A Finnish woman was talking with him, asking some things. She said she would want to help if there was anything she could do. She asked what did the boy wish, what kind of future he would want for him and his siblings. And he said that he hopes to die some day so that all his problems would fade away. Is that what a little boy should wish?
Daniel, the boy I just told about, and his siblings
I could tell many other stories too, how people with illnesses can't get help, how kids have to go to work right after they turn 5 years. How girls have to face sexual violence, they get pregnant and become moms when they're 13. How just one mosquitoes bite can kill.

Robin said in the show that the trip to Burundi, where he made his music video, really opened his eyes and he's ashamed how much and easily we complain about everything. Our day is ruined if our iPhone doesn't have enough of charge and a bad hair day is almost the end of the world. C'mon people, aren't there any bigger troubles?

I am very happy how Finns were, and are, active helpers. It was great to see how many people wanted to join the Red Nose Day and many celebrities wanted to go to the show. I don't know about other countries but I hope it is working at least as well in ohter places as here.

Here you can see the official page of the red nose day in finland
